Expansion of Den Gamle By

Aarhus’s biggest attraction, Den Gamle By, is planning to expand the museum with a neighbourhood of 20th-century buildings.
The expansion will take place on a site situated between the current museum grounds and the Ceres junction.
In addition to a closed block of historic buildings, a building for the Danish Poster Museum will be constructed, and Politiken’s pavilion from the 1909 National Exhibition will be rebuilt.

The extension is to be situated on a site that currently houses a playground, public toilets and an older kiosk building. The kiosk building is worthy of preservation and will be dismantled by Den Gamle By, to be later rebuilt as part of the museum.
The playground will be re-established to the east of the local plan area, and in connection with the construction of the Danish Poster Museum, public toilets will be provided for visitors to the playground and the Botanical Gardens.

The 100-square-metre pavilion building is to be used as an entrance building and kiosk for the two museums.

The 20th-century quarter will feature buildings that tell the story of the backstreets and working-class neighbourhoods of the interwar and post-war periods. It has already been decided to mothball the entire Bent J’s jazz bar when the bar closes in the spring. The bar will later be reconstructed in Den Gamle By to tell the story of jazz and pubs.

A canal will be constructed alongside the new block, in which the stream running through the area will be dammed. The canal will form part of a harbour area designed to tell the story of the industrialisation of the harbours throughout the 20th century. It is perhaps precisely because of the harbour area that Den Gamle By has received a donation of 161 million kroner from the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation.
