Covering of the Banegraven
iAs part of the 2008 budget agreement, the City Council has allocated 1 million Danish kroner to a study into the possibilities of covering the railway cutting.
There has long been discussion about whether it would be possible to cover the railway line between Bruuns Bridge and Frederiks Bridge, thereby creating a large new area for urban development close to the city centre.
In 2007, Steen & Strøm (owners of Bruuns Galleri) put forward a proposal for a cover as a way of creating space for an extension to the shopping centre, and as part of the Planning Strategy process, the company has submitted three case studies with proposals for development.
The three proposals comprise a masterplan incorporating residential and commercial use, an extension of the block structure on both sides, and finally a proposal for the location of a multi-purpose hall.
The area is attractive because it is close to the city centre and is ideally situated in terms of both public and private transport. Virtually all forms of public transport pass within 100 metres, and there are transport links via both Værkmestergade and Frederiks Allé.
