Redevelopment of the Municipal Hospital
Aarhus Municipal Hospital ceased to operate as an independent hospital following the hospital merger in 2004, and over the next 10–20 years, hospital activities in the distinctive red hospital complex will also cease, in favour of the newly built hospital complex at Skejby.
The history of the Municipal Hospital dates back to the late 19th century, whilst the current buildings were mainly constructed from 1931 onwards.
As with another major building complex in the area, the architectural firm C F Møller was responsible for the expansion plans.
The expansion of Skejby Hospital is a long-term process, and the departments at the County Hospital are the first to be affected. For the same reason, construction and modernisation work is still ongoing at KH; for example, work is currently underway on an oncology centre, and a multi-storey car park is on the drawing board.
As part of the funding for Skejby Hospital, the plan is to sell the buildings on Nørrebrogade, but no use for them or a buyer has yet been found.
iLauritz B. Holm-Nielsen, Vice-Chancellor of Aarhus University, has previously announced i stated that negotiations are underway regarding the acquisition of the site and buildings for an expansion of the University.
Such a use seems obvious. The buildings are ideally situated in relation to the university’s other buildings and expansion plans, and their layout is well suited to research and education – activities which, after all, are already taking place on a large scale in these very buildings.
