Refurbishment of the Marine Engineering School
iOnce the new educational centre on the harbour’s northern bastion is complete, the Marine Engineering School will vacate its current premises on Borggade.
The buildings were sold in the second half of 2006 for just over 100 million kroner, but the buyer has not yet revealed its plans for the central buildings.
The site covers approximately 3,000 square metres, of which about half is built on, with the main building being the largest structure.
The Aarhus City Association has put forward a proposal to build a multi-storey car park on the site, partly to replace the parking spaces on Bispetorv that are due to be removed in the near future.
The idea is more than obvious, as the site is one of the last large, contiguous, low-density plots in the area, and the location is perfect in relation to the other major multi-storey car parks in the city centre: Magasin, Busgaden and Salling.
The main problem is the traffic flow, which will likely require a major reorganisation so that entry is via Borggade (which is currently a one-way street leading out of the city) and exit is via Paradisgade. This will not be ideal, but it will be at least as good as the access to Salling’s car park.
iThe idea of a multi-storey car park in the Latin Quarter was actually included in the 2001 Local Plan, although no specific location was mentioned.
