Katrinebjerg, the IT town
The area between Paludan Müllersvej, Katrinebjergvej and Ringgaden is set to become Aarhus’ future Silicon Valley.
iThe area was previously a light industrial zone, and a few larger companies, as well as a number of smaller ones, still operate here.
iProbably the area’s best-known occupant is Storcenter Nord, which is housed in GASA’s old (and extensively refurbished) horticultural halls.
The development of Katrinebjerg has already been underway for several years, but in autumn 2006 an Urban Space Manual was published, outlining the local authority’s plans for the area.
The essence of the manual is that the area is to be used for education in IT-related subjects, as well as for light industrial businesses seeking to achieve synergy by being located in the heart of a campus area.
Storcenter Nord is to continue to play an important role as a neighbourhood centre, and plans are underway to create an urban park on the roof of the centre.
Over time, Helsingforsgade will be transformed into a through-route with a ‘high-street’ character, towards which the buildings will face.
The area is already home to several IT courses, and there are plans to relocate the IT engineering programmes here once the current School of Engineering vacates the premises.
