3. The Price of Iron

A trade for irreplaceable metal turns into a dispute over lineage, labour and who is allowed to repair the roads.

A damaged coupling inside Solvognen cannot be reproduced with modern alloys. Liv directs the team to Svartalfheim, where autonomous foundries still make materials designed for stellar corridors. The route opens underground, among halls that glow with furnace light and continue working although their original masters are gone.

The foundries

The surviving guilds operate machinery through inherited gestures and spoken measures. They offer the required iron in exchange for Liv, whom their records identify as Vanir property. Elias rejects the demand. Voss, speaking through the expedition link, orders him to preserve negotiations at any cost.

Rune studies a failed production line while Freja and Signe reconstruct the contract language. He discovers that the machine is not waiting for an authorised bloodline; it is waiting for a complete diagnostic response. The guild forbids him to continue because a person without lineage cannot address the forge.

Smith without lineage

When the central furnace begins to collapse, Rune ignores both the guild and Voss. He bridges modern control equipment into an ancient maintenance port and improvises the missing response. The foundry accepts him, marks his tools and names him smith without lineage. To the guild this is impossible: the system has recognised competence where tradition recognises only descent.

The repaired line produces the coupling. Freja offers the diagnostic method as payment, making the exchange knowledge for material rather than person for material. Some guild leaders accept; others declare the bargain theft because it breaks their monopoly on interpretation.

Episode 3 chronology

  1. Material failure

The team identifies an alloy that Midgard cannot manufacture.

  2. The guild bargain

Svartalfheim offers the metal in exchange for Liv.

  3. Foundry collapse

A failing production line threatens the underground halls.

  4. Recognition

Rune repairs the line and is named smith without lineage.

  5. New coordinates

The repaired coupling exposes another layer of Solvognen’s route map.

The price

The coupling restores functions in Solvognen that had appeared decorative. One wheel now turns independently and exposes a deeper coordinate set. Rune’s new mark also causes dormant foundry records to identify Midgard’s humans as unrestricted operators. The team leaves with the metal, but Svartalfheim’s political order has been changed by a single repair.
