6. The Hostages of Midgard

A seizure attempt at Stevns forces the team through Vanaheim and reveals that Liv is not carrying a map—she is one.

Project SolPorten’s secrecy ends when a foreign unit enters the Stevns facility using intelligence supplied from inside the programme. Its objective is Solvognen and Liv. Voss initiates a lockdown that traps both attackers and project staff around an active platform.

Flight through the gate

Elias opens the only route Liv believes can be defended: Vanaheim, the surviving centre of the Vanir compact. Freja, Malik, Signe, Rune and Liv cross with several injured personnel while Elias remains behind to delay the seizure. The aperture closes before Voss can follow.

Vanaheim receives Liv as both citizen and instrument. Its council explains that children were once engineered to carry changing route states when central maps could no longer be trusted. Liv is the last known living instance. The light beneath her skin is not a symptom; it is the network rewriting itself through her.

Hostages

The council offers Midgard protection if Liv stays permanently and Solvognen is surrendered. Freja recognises the same ownership claim the team rejected in Svartalfheim. Liv chooses to return, arguing that a map cannot decide who may travel if somebody else owns the map.

At Stevns, Elias turns the lockdown against the attackers and exposes their internal source. Signe had been ordered to transmit project reports to a separate Danish intelligence chain; those reports were compromised abroad. She admits her role and gives Elias the access codes needed to retake the chamber.

A connected crisis

The team returns through a route Liv constructs from memory. The seizure ends without Solvognen leaving the platform, but the political fiction of a purely Danish secret is over. Voss uses the attack to argue for immediate control of Bifröst. Freja argues it proves why nobody should possess central control. Liv’s map now shows Bifröst pulsing inside the Sun.
