4. The Giant’s Measure

The new coordinate set leads to Jötunheim, a high-gravity world shaped by structures large enough to redirect rivers and stabilise continental plates. Its custodians are long-lived people whose size reflects both adaptation and ritual engineering. They do not threaten the expedition. They test it.

The measure

Each visitor is asked to activate a local route instrument. Liv can see its map but cannot command it. Freja, Elias, Malik, Signe and Rune all produce different responses, none of which the custodians have recorded from an authorised lineage. The instrument does not reject them. It asks them to choose.

Malik concludes that humans lack the biological permissions encoded by both Vanir and Æsir. That absence is not a disability. The network treats them as unclassified operators and exposes routes that inherited users cannot even request.

The stolen controller

The custodians recognise the Golden Face and show Freja an archive of its removal. Solvognen was not built on Earth. During the network war, Vanir agents stole the portable controller and carried it to Midgard because an unclassified population could hide it without activating Æsir tracking. The familiar ritual object was camouflage that remained functional.

Voss orders Elias to obtain Jötunheim’s archive. Freja refuses to convert hospitality into extraction. The disagreement becomes the first explicit break between the field team and programme command. The custodians give them one record freely: an image of the Dark Face opening a road toward a dead star.

What Midgard means

Jötunheim changes the project’s central question. Earth is not a primitive realm accidentally rediscovering advanced machinery. It is the hiding place chosen because its people stand outside the network’s inherited hierarchy. The same freedom that makes exploration possible also makes Midgard uniquely dangerous to every surviving authority.
