5. The Dead Road
The Dark Face opens a route to Hel, where memory has outlived its star and Freja finds the last record of her mother.
The record from Jötunheim allows Signe to decode the Dark Face. Unlike the Golden Face, it does not navigate by living stellar output. It addresses extinguished stars, hidden systems and preserved states. When the team aligns it at Stevns, the light that opens is almost colourless.
iArchive at the end of light
Hel is a memory installation orbiting a dead star. Its chambers contain recorded minds, mission logs and incomplete reconstructions from realms lost during fragmentation. The archive presents information through people the visitor will trust. Elias sees a former commander. Malik sees his childhood teacher. Freja sees her mother, Anna Madsen, missing since an undocumented excavation twenty years earlier.
iThe reconstruction cannot prove that Anna survived, only that she reached Hel after activating a partial route. Her final record says she hid evidence of the Stevns chamber after learning that Bifröst was attempting to restart. She believed a full reconnection would expose Midgard to both the Æsir and something travelling beneath the network’s visible routes.
Do not open Bifröst
The archive’s oldest coherent instruction is repeated across destroyed realms: Do not open Bifröst. Bifröst is not merely a bridge but the central router capable of discovering and coordinating every active path. Fragmentation was a defensive act. Restoring the router would reverse it.
Voss orders a complete copy of Hel. Malik warns that the archive stores responsive minds, not inert files. Copying it may be equivalent to removing people. Freja takes only Anna’s voluntarily released record and the route warning.

A personal command
Back at Stevns, Freja conceals part of her mother’s message from Voss: Anna believed Solvognen would eventually choose a bearer, and that the bearer must be prepared to destroy one of its faces. The project now has a route to Bifröst and its clearest instruction not to use it.
