2. Alfheim

Beneath a failing artificial sun, the team finds engineered descendants, a forbidden guide and the first evidence that the realms were built.

The first deliberate route carries Project SolPorten into a forest brighter than any northern summer. The light is not natural. A vast structure spans the sky, distributing energy from a contained stellar source whose output has begun to pulse. Malik recognises an ecosystem calibrated around artificial daylight; Freja recognises that every settlement faces the same luminous axis.

Children of the light

Alfheim’s inhabitants appear human, but generations of directed adaptation have changed their eyes, skin and metabolism. They call themselves the Ljos and preserve maintenance procedures as seasonal rites. Their keepers insist the sky has always been a divine gift. Rune finds access panels beneath an altar and proves the “sun-priests” are repeating only part of an abandoned technical sequence.

The team’s attempt to stabilise the light triggers an automated quarantine. Elias wants to withdraw before the aperture closes. Freja refuses to leave while the artificial sun is failing, and Malik calculates that a controlled reduction will buy the settlements several years.

Liv

Inside the restricted maintenance garden they find Liv. She has been held there because lines of light appear beneath her skin whenever the network changes. She knows the destination symbols without having studied them and identifies Solvognen as a portable route controller stolen from the Æsir. She also recognises Midgard as a realm deliberately removed from every map.

Liv guides Rune through the final repair and insists on leaving with the team. The Ljos authorities call her dangerous; she calls herself evidence. When Solvognen opens the return route, the artificial sun answers with a system-wide pulse. Somewhere beyond Alfheim, another dormant connection wakes.

The warning

At Stevns, Liv refuses to speak in the command room until the Golden Face is covered. She warns Freja about the One Beneath the Ash, an intelligence or creature that notices restored routes. Voss records only the strategic facts: Alfheim is inhabited, its infrastructure can be influenced from Midgard, and Liv can read the network. Liv becomes both guest and classified asset.
