The waterfront

The waterfront is the section of quay that will be situated between the two bastions in the inner basin.

The area is currently characterised by the Customs House, Pier 1 and a large number of parking spaces on the land adjacent to the Grenå railway line.
Until recently, KFK’s old grain silo also stood on this site.
The master plan for the urban harbour areas envisages the removal of Pier 1 to create an open stretch of water facing the town and a future open harbour area.
The City Council has just launched a design competition for the area. The competition will cover the entire area from the mouth of the river to the northern bastion, and will therefore also include the development of the area around the southern bastion – the bastion earmarked for the future Multimedia Centre.

In the competition brief, the complete removal of Pier 1 is not a prerequisite. The City Council has left it up to the participants to propose what should happen to the site. In recent years, the pier has been used as a storage area for the harbour, occasionally interrupted by more event-oriented uses.
For example, both TDC and Vestas have held large parties on the site, whilst the Tall Ships Race in 2007 made extensive use of the additional quay space.
On the other hand, it is virtually certain that the car parks currently located on the site will not remain there. During a transitional phase, they will be relocated to Pier 1, but in the longer term, the plan is for both bastions to house large car parks.
