From the outset, the intention was for ARoS to have both a heaven theme and a hell theme.
Hell was realised from the outset through the ‘Nine Rooms’ in the basement, a reference to Dante’s narratives, whilst heaven remained an empty and windswept roof terrace.

However, funding has now been secured to create an installation, and following a competition, Olafur Eliasson’s project has been selected.

The project consists mainly of a circular viewing platform offering a view across the entire city. The glass is tinted in the colours of the rainbow.
In addition, there is a spherical room containing prisms, as well as a multifunctional space and a camera obscura.

At the unveiling, the Realdania Foundation pledged 30 million kroner for the artwork, and has subsequently pledged a further 10 million, as installing this large-scale artwork at ARoS will be a very demanding task. The project is expected to begin in 2008 and be completed in late summer 2009.
