Belgian Trappist beer has gradually made its way into even the darkest of cellars, but one brewery still keeps production volumes low and quality high. We are, of course, talking about Westvleteren.
Westvleteren is almost as famous for its elusiveness as for its flavour. The beer is produced only in small quantities and is sold exclusively at the brewery and in a small café opposite. You can reserve a crate in advance if you’re lucky enough to get through on the phone, or else you can join the queue on the few days a year when the beer is on sale.

Like the brewery’s other beers, Westvleteren Blond is a surprisingly different yet incredibly well-executed example of its genre. The flavour is full-bodied with subtle aromas. It has a heavier mouthfeel than most blonde beers, making it better suited to accompanying a meal or as an evening beer than as a thirst-quencher in the sun.
