1. A little about this document

   This FAQ covers frequently asked questions (and answers) in Tele Danmark
   Internet’s own newsgroups (the tele.internet.* hierarchy), covering, amongst other things:
    1. answers to the frequently asked questions that various TD@ staff
   encounter
    2. how to behave in the respective groups (netiquette)
    3. what the various newsgroups cover
 
 New users of the newsgroups are advised to read through this
   FAQ in its entirety.
   
   This document has been produced in collaboration (in particular) with the people at
   tele.internet.snak. Many thanks for any criticism, praise, corrections, etc., which have

2. To all new users

   It may be a good idea to follow the ‘day-to-day goings-on’ in some groups
   before you start posting. As a new user, you should not post a
   post in the group until you’ve been following the discussion for 14–21 days –
   this helps avoid too many repetitions. It can also help
   help ensure a more measured tone, as it is often newcomers who are not
   fully familiar with how to ‘address’ one another. It should be
   be noted that it is, of course, not forbidden to post messages straight
   away.
   
3. Use of the newsgroups

   Here is some information about the written and unwritten
   rules of the newsgroups, which you should adhere to.
   
  3.1 Posting your message in the correct newsgroup
 
 It is important that you post your message in an appropriate newsgroup.
   For example, ‘tele.internet’ is plagued by a great deal of unnecessary noise (i.e. incorrectly
   posted messages), which serve no purpose but instead cause a nuisance
   to everyone.
 
 An example might be: you have a problem with your sound card under
   Windows 95, so tele.internet is not the right group. An
   appropriate group would be tele.internet.os.win95, dk.edb.ms-windows
   or dk.edb.hardware.
 
 If you cannot find a suitable group, tele.internet.snak is an
   suitable group. You can always move the discussion to another
   group if appropriate.
 
 3.2 Tone of conversation in the groups
 
 You should ‘speak’ (i.e. write) to one another using proper language. Address
   to others as you would like to be addressed yourself.
 
 Tele Danmark Internet reserves the full right to terminate subscriptions
   where, following repeated warnings, subscribers are unable to behave in a reasonably
   polite manner.

4. Tele Danmark Internet’s own newsgroups

   This group is intended for discussion between users and staff
   at Tele Danmark Internet on topics related to connecting to the service.
 
 Please note: The support provided by TD@ staff in the tele.* groups is
   not official.
 
 4.1 tele.internet
 
 This group is intended for discussion between users of Tele
   Danmark Internet, its staff, and on topics relating to connecting
   to the service.
   
   Tele Danmark (TD) and Tele Danmark Internet (TD@) are not the same
   company. TD@ provides only the connection to the Internet. In other words, TD@
   is not responsible for, for example, TD’s high telephone charges. For enquiries regarding
   the telephone company Tele Danmark, please call: 80 80 80 80
 
 4.1.1 Where can I find questions and answers myself?
    
   You can do so, amongst other places, at: [40]http://www.inet.tele.dk/support It is also
   a very good idea to read previous posts and replies in
   the tele.internet.* newsgroups.
   
   All (80%+) of all posts (though not posts to Tele Danmark Internet’s
   own newsgroups – the tele.* hierarchy) are archived at Dejanews,
   [41]http://www.dejanews.com If you have the time, energy and inclination, you’ll
   probably find the answer to your problem here.
 
 4.1.2 New access points
    
   Tele Danmark Internet covers the whole country at local rates. Therefore, there is
   no need for additional access points.

    4.1.3 FavouriteInternet

 4.1.4 Is the postX server down?
    
   It may happen that one of the mail servers is not running. If you cannot access
   your mailbox, you can check whether the server is actually down
   as follows:
 
 Go to [44]http://www.inet.tele.dk/status/ and see if there are any errors on the
   mail server you’re connected to.
 
 4.2 tele.internet.binaer
 
 This group is intended for posting binary files. In other words, binary
   files should not be posted alongside your message in a standard
   newsgroup, but separately in tele.internet.binaer
 
 Binary files are, simply put, anything that isn’t text. Such as
   images, programmes, long documents or text files. In other words, files that you
   think others might find useful.
 
 4.3 tele.internet.flame
 
 Tele Danmark Internet’s internal newsgroup for flaming. If you’re angry
   or annoyed with one or more people, you can vent your frustrations in this
   group.
   
  4.4 tele.internet.isdn
 
 A group for discussing the setup of ISDN connections, modems
   and so on. Also if you’re having problems with your ISDN connection to Tele
   Danmark Internet.
   
  4.5 tele.internet.os.*
 
 Here you’ll find a number of groups dedicated to various operating systems.
   The newsgroup names are self-explanatory, so further information
   should be unnecessary.
 
 4.6 tele.internet.snak
 
 This group is intended for chat, discussion, etc., where the topic falls
   outside the scope of any of the other newsgroups.
 
 4.7 tele.internet.spil
 
 As the group’s name suggests, this group is intended for help,
   discussion and so on regarding games.
   
    4.7.1 Tele Danmark Internet’s Quake server

   about how to get started playing Quake over the Internet.
 
 4.8 tele.internet.www
 
 This newsgroup is intended for discussion about the World Wide Web (WWW).
   This includes issues with your website, problems with uploading, etc. This is
   where you can find answers if, for example, you’re unsure how to resolve a
   specific problem with setting up your website (or any
   other site). HTML in general.

    4.8.1 How to order or cancel a website
 
 You can order your website at this address

    4.8.2 Website design software

   where you’re sure to find a useful programme.

 4.8.3 Uploading a website
 
 An FTP programme is required. On Tele Danmark Internet’s TUCOWS mirror
   [50]http://tucows.inet.tele.dk you’ll find many different
   FTP programmes.
 
 The FTP programme requires various details before you can
   upload your pages to TD@’s servers.
    1. The Host Name is homeX-upload.inet.tele.dk, where the ‘X’ is replaced by
 the number in your email address. If your address is
 “hans@post1.tele.dk”, it should read: “home1-upload.inet.tele.dk”
    2. The User ID is your email username. If your email address is
 “hans@post1.tele.dk”, you should enter “hans”
    3. The password (password) can be found in the email you
 received when you ordered your website.
       
   You must have a page named either “index.html” or
   “index.htm”, as this page is automatically sent when someone
   visits your website. What you name all your other pages is entirely
   up to you.
   
   Please note that Tele Danmark Internet’s servers are case-sensitive, meaning that there is a
   distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters in filenames. Therefore, please stick to
   filenames written in lowercase letters only.
   
    4.8.4 A counter

 4.8.5 A guestbook
 
 At [54]LPage.com you can get a free guestbook. - You may wish to seek
   help on how to use it in the [55]tele.internet.www newsgroup
   
   Other options include ‘hunting’ around other websites and
   using the ‘View|(Document) Source’ functions. It would be
   wise to first save the website you’re visiting to your hard drive using ‘Save
   As".
 
 4.8.6 The relationship between email addresses and website addresses
 
 The relationship is (for the most part) very logical:
     * The website address takes the form: http://homeX.inet.tele.dk/navn
     * That is, if your email address is, for example, krumme@post5.tele.dk, your
 website address will be http://home5.inet.tele.dk/krumme
       
  4.9 tele.test
 
 You can post as many test messages as you like here. In other words, the group is not
   used for discussing any topics, but solely for testing your
   newsgroup client, etc.
   NB: You are, of course, welcome to post binary files to this group.
   
5. Netiquette

   Netiquette is a portmanteau of ‘net’ and ‘etiquette’. In other words, the social
   rules of conduct on the internet. There are many written codes of netiquette available
   online – here we simply summarise the most important elements.
 
 Communicating via the internet creates a sense of great distance,
   which can tempt you to express yourself more categorically and less
   politely than you otherwise would. This achieves nothing. The most important
   rule is therefore: Do not write anything different from what you would have
   said in a conversation or a normal letter.
 
The fact that posts must be able to be sent as emails limits
   the range of expression. However, a standard has been developed to indicate
   _underlining_, *bold text* and SHOUTING.

 5.1 Quoting
 
 If you are replying to a post, it is a good idea to quote the parts of the
   original post to which you are replying. Most newsreaders can
   automatically insert the original post with indentation. You should only
   quote the parts of the post that you are actually commenting on. In other words:
   quote as little as possible without losing the original meaning.
 
 Important: If, for example, you quote a post of 100 lines and then
   add at the bottom: “I completely agree”, this is not only a waste of
   bandwidth but also poor netiquette. This kind of poor netiquette
   unfortunately occurs very often. Therefore: for your own sake and that of others,
   only quote the line or paragraph you are commenting on. This is best for all
   parties.
 
 Be careful with irony; it is easily misunderstood. You can indicate that
   something is not to be taken seriously with a smiley ;-), and that something is
   friendly with the happy smiley :-)
 
 5.2 Flaming / junk mailing
  
   If you wish to ‘flame’, i.e. write something negative about someone,
   or tell someone off, the newsgroup alt.flame or
   tele.internet.flame is the place to do so.
 
 5.3 Signature
  
   A signature is a few lines of text that most newsreaders
   can automatically append to the end of a post to a newsgroup.
   Here, for example, you can include your email address, website URL,
   a quote, etc. An example might be:

 It is good practice to keep your signature to a maximum of 4 lines. It is therefore not
   good netiquette to, for example, quote a 100-line poem and then
   refer to your website for further information.
 
 It is standard practice to separate the post from the signature with "-- "
   (dash-dash-space); this allows users of some newsreaders to
   choose not to display the signature. Some newsreaders (such as
   Netscape Navigator) can automatically insert "-- ".
   
  5.4 Abbreviations
 
 There are many different abbreviations used in
   newsgroups. They each stand for various standard expressions which
   would otherwise be very cumbersome to write out in full. It is a kind of
   slang, most of which originates from English. Here are some of the
   most commonly used:
   
   AFAIK = As Far As I Know
 
 ASAP = As Soon As Possible
 
 AWYR = Awaiting Your Reply
   
   BOFH = Bastard Operator From Hell (a system administrator)
 
 BRGDS = Best regards (best regards)
   
   BTW = By The Way
 
 BWFH = Bastard Webmaster From Hell (a webmaster)
 
 EOD = End Of Discussion (end of discussion)
 
 FYI = For Your Information (for your information)
 
 IMHO = In My Humble Opinion (in my humble opinion)
   
   PLS = Please (please)
 
 QDPSH = Quick 'N Dirty Perl Solution Hacker ((no translation (a
   homemade one?!?)))
   
   QDSM = Quick 'N Dirty Solution Manager (a sort of manager/leader (a
   homemade one?!?))
 
 ROTFL = Rolling On The Floor Laughing (rolling on the floor laughing)
 
 SVJV = As Far As I Know (Danish translation of AFAIK)

   Due to the way the news server is configured, it may take at least 1
   minute before your post is visible. So please be a little
   patient. In fact, approximately 450,000
   new articles arrive every day.
 
 6.2 Post retention times on the server
 
 alt.binaries.* are retained for 3 days (some for 7)
 
 alt.sex.* is retained for 5 days
 
 alt.warez.* is retained for 3 days
 
 dk.* is retained for 365 days
 
 tele.* is retained for 365 days
   
   *.test is retained for 2 days
