Bodega Theatre
iFortunately, Aarhus has a fair number of restaurants serving good Danish food.
One of these is Teater Bodega, situated on Skolegade opposite the theatre.
The premises have housed a restaurant since 1910, and one is tempted to think that some of the décor – and not least the service – has been there all along.
Teater Bodega has a straightforward yet varied lunch menu, where open sandwiches are complemented by classic dishes such as pork and egg omelette, Biksemad, Pariserbøf and Wiener schnitzel (with vegetables and butter sauce).
The dishes are served in generous portions, and with a touch of humour. For several of the dishes, the frying pan is brought to the table so you can help yourself to an extra portion.
Teater Bodega hasn’t jumped on the beer bandwagon but sticks to local draught beers. However, they do have a schnapps menu, so you can enjoy your herring with your favourite brand. The bottle is happily left on the table so you can help yourself to an extra glass and then pay for what you’ve had.
Coffee is served in old Madam Blå coffee pots, and there’s a nice selection of ‘small biscuits on a plate’ if your stomach fancies a digestif after lunch.
In the evening, the menu’s selection expands considerably, and you can choose from a range of dishes spanning from hearty to refined Danish cuisine.
Teater Bodega is certainly a restaurant worth recommending, perfect for a Sunday lunch or a relaxed dinner. The Bodega’s reputation is, ‘unfortunately’, well-known, so it can be difficult to get a table unless you book well in advance.
