New Ferry Terminal

The original Master Plan for the Port of Aarhus set out two alternatives: a container port in the east and a ferry port in the north, or a new urban district in the north with all port activities in the east.
As is well known, option 2 was chosen, and in connection with this, a development option was added to enable the port to establish a new ferry terminal in an area south-east of the container port.

The terminal is to be built on reclaimed land and will serve both the Mols Line ferries to Zealand and the port’s other ro-ro (roll-on, roll-off) traffic. There are also plans to establish a recreational area on the site.
The potential future heliport, as well as a possible route to Samsø, could also be suitably located here.

The ferry terminal is of interest because it is essential for the completion of the northern harbour areas close to the town. The MolsLine has a lease on its site until 2020, but it is already seeking to relocate, partly because the traffic challenges involved in operating a ferry terminal in the middle of Denmark’s most densely built-up urban development area are very real.

In its latest agreement on future investments, the City Council has granted the port permission to bring forward its plans, provided that the terminal cannot be put into operation until the Marselis Tunnel has been opened, which, according to the plans, will take place in 2015.
