iÅboulevarden has gained a new cocktail bar in the premises that originally housed a role-playing shop, and which have since served as a tanning salon and a rather ill-fated attempt at a bar with the politically incorrect name ‘Smoke’.
It’s now called Guldbar, and in its adverts the bar markets itself to a discerning clientele with a penchant for pampering and a good drink after dinner.
We tried the place on the Saturday following its opening night on Friday, and the result was somewhat disappointing.
The décor, it must be said, is among the finest in recent Aarhus bar history, but the service and the drinks are by no means in a league of their own.
Service is provided at the bar. This is the same as at the vast majority of other venues, but people with a penchant for a bit of indulgence would prefer to be served at their tables.
Judging by the menu, the selection of drinks was rather dull. No specialities here, just the same old mass-produced branded spirits mixed with various soft drinks.
I opted for a mojito, despite the drinks menu’s rather shocking revelation that it was made with Bacardi. A mojito should be made with Cuban rum… Full stop… (And yes, Bacardi used to be Cuban, but it isn’t any more).
Anyway, the three drinks were made and inspected… They had a strange yellow colour, perhaps because something that looked more like an orange than the usual lime had been used.
There was plenty of sugar in the drink and not as much ice as other bars tend to use, but the taste of mint was virtually non-existent. We soon found the explanation. At the bottom of the drink lay strips of wilted mint that were probably fresh last month..
Overall, the drink was drinkable, but it wasn’t exactly a great experience, and you’d have to be rather cheeky to call it a mojito.
Apart from the mixed drinks, the drinks menu was limited to a rather dull, predictable selection of champagnes and beers. No attempt had been made to source finer or rarer varieties for this Aarhus establishment.
The décor is the only thing that lifts it slightly, and means they’re probably worth giving another chance some other day.
